Rural Women Studies Association to Host Inter-School Storytelling Competition on Unsung Women

The Nigeria Chapter of the Rural Women Studies Association (RuWSA) is set to host an inter-school storytelling competition aimed at celebrating the remarkable contributions of women whose stories have remained largely untold despite their significant impact on society.

The competition, themed ‘Unsung Women: Breaking Barriers, Building the Future,” will take place on Thursday, July 23, 2026,  at Pius De Pious Event Place, Ijeun-Lukosi, Abeokuta, beginning at 10:00 a.m.

The event is expected to bring together students from six secondary schools across Ogun State, namely *Baptist Girls College, African Church Grammar School, St. Peter’s College, Reverend Kuti Memorial Grammar School, Abeokuta Girls’ Grammar School, and Lisabi Grammar School*, who will compete through the art of storytelling.

The storytelling competition is designed to inspire young people to research, appreciate, and narrate the lives and achievements of women who have broken barriers and contributed immensely to nation-building, community development, education, leadership, entrepreneurship, and other spheres of society.

The Ogun State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, is expected to attend the event as the Special Guest of Honour.

According to a statement signed by the Chairman of the Planning Committee, Prof. Olubunmi Ashimolowo, the competition forms part of the association’s commitment to promoting gender equity, preserving inspiring narratives of women, and encouraging students to develop critical thinking, creativity, public speaking, and storytelling skills.

Prof. Ashimolowo noted that the initiative would not only celebrate the achievements of women who have made significant contributions to society but also inspire the younger generation to become agents of positive change by learning from their resilience, courage, and leadership.

She added that the event is expected to attract education stakeholders, academics, students, parents, and advocates of gender development who share the association’s vision of building an inclusive society where the contributions of women are recognised and celebrated.
